Thomas E. Charles of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died Wednesday, July 1, 2020 at Wesley Enhanced Living Pennypack Park. He was 97 years old. Thomas was born May 9, 1923 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Thomas B. Charles and the late Eleanor Charles (nee - Smith). He is the beloved husband of the late Marie D. Charles; father of Thomas M. Charles and Carol M. Ball. Grandfather of Douglas B. Charles; brother of the late Nancy Cunningham and the late Sabra Charles; and the uncle of Nancy C. Vandegrift, Janice Kimble, Elaine Chelius, John Hurly, Bob Hurly and Ed Hurly.

Thomas grew up in Fox Chase, and was a graduate of Olney High School in Philadelphia. He enlisted in the United States Navy and was stationed on the USS Missouri during World War II. He was able to witness the signing of the Japanese surrender on September 2, 1945. He married Marie Wingis in July 1956. They raised their family in the Logan and later on the Fox Chase sections of Philadelphia. He worked for the Budd Company for 62 years. Thomas was an avid Phillies fan. He played baseball in his youth with Del Ennis and later was the pitcher on Jeanes Hospital pick up games. He was an animal lover especially his beloved cats Buddha Cat and Teddy and his dog Spanky who he cared for for years prior to the cats. Thomas loved trips to Ocean City, NJ the week after Fourth on July staying at Anna Sandberg House and enjoying Flanders Pool. His Saturday nights were spent watching Lawrence Welk. His favorite songs were “Only You” by The Platters and “Green Sleeves”. Thomas loved the town of Harleton, PA where his Mom and Dad would take the family when he was young.

A private service took place under the care of Abington Friends Meeting, 520 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown, PA 19046.
