Simone Annie Gaillard McGarry of Horsham, PA beloved wife of the late Edwin B. McGarry, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Saturday July 23, 2022. She was 88 years old.

Born to Raymonde Raymondeau and Lucien Gaillard in La Rochelle, France on March 30, 1934, Simone grew up with her eight siblings. Shaped by the experiences of childhood in war-torn France, Simone was a smart, creative, well-read woman who breezed through school and completed two years of University by the time she was 15. She worked as a translator in the U.S. Army, where she met her husband “Eddy” during his service in France. Simone traveled to the United States on the SS United States to join Eddy after his return to the States. They married on June 12, 1954. They celebrated 55 years of marriage prior to his death in 2009.

Raising eight children with her husband Ed, Simone was so much more than a Mom. She was the most savvy shopper and greatest bargain hunter who could turn one dollar into ten dollars worth of whatever she was working on. She carved out her own career as a simultaneous translator, accomplished seamstress, French teacher, and antique glass dealer. She enjoyed sports more than you would guess a tiny little French woman might. As her family grew, there was no track meet, volleyball, football, soccer, or basketball game that was too far away to attend. She was a superfan who was known to scope out an entire marathon course - not content to watch from a single vantage point. Simone was affectionately known as “Grandmere” to her family and just about everyone who was lucky enough to meet her in the last 30 years. She will be greatly missed by her eight children, seventeen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and innumerable friends and relatives.

Simone is survived by her eldest son and devoted caregiver of the past eight years, Kevin McGarry of Ocean City, NJ; son Daniel McGarry and his partner Renee Reinhardt of Kalama, WA; son William McGarry of Ocean City, NJ; daughter Catherine Greene and her husband Kevin Greene, and their seven children, Danielle and her husband Victor Nappen and their two children, Tripp and Killian; Caitlin, Kelsey, Shannon, Mackenzie, Korey and Tyler of Ocean City, NJ; daughter Jacqueline Lemke and her husband, Brian, and their four children, Kurt, Alyssa, Camryn and Monette of Fishers, IN; daughter Michele McCloskey and her husband Michael, and their three children, Kiernan, Megan and Kyle of Lower Gywnedd, PA; son Richard McGarry and his wife, Susan, and their two children, Marissa and Robert of Manayunk, PA; and daughter Genevieve Cole and her husband Jake of Springfield, VT., along with her son Shane Zandotti and his father Eric.
Simone is also survived by her sisters, Cathy Chantreau and her partner Philippe, Genevieve Gigon, her brother Maurice Gaillard, and her in-laws Odette Gaillard and Jean Berthier of France. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sisters Jacqueline Boinot, Marie Therese Berthier, and Yvette Gaillard; her brothers Yves Gaillard and Michel Gaillard; and her cherished in-laws Michel Chantreau and Emil Boinot. She is also survived by countless nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Simone McGarry was memorialized in a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Catherine of Siena Roman Catholic Church in Horsham, PA on Thursday, July 28, 2022. The viewing was held at the church at 10:00 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. The burial followed at St. John Neumann Cemetery.
