James J. McCarthy of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at Holy Redeemer Hospice. He was 85 years old. James was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania son of the late Thomas J. McCarthy Sr. and the late Catherine McCarthy (nee - Gellert). He is the beloved husband of Joan Marie McCarthy (nee Graham); father of Dolores Jonczak and her husband Chip, Denise, James and his wife Carlene, Daniel and his wife Jodi, and the late David McCarthy and his wife Theresa; grandfather of 14 and the great grandfather of 14; brother of the late Teresa Cathcart, the late Thomas McCarthy Jr., the late Catherine Seeger, the late Ann Wyatt, the late Frank McCarthy, and the late Bernard McCarthy.

James met Joan while skating at Carmen Skating Rink. They fell in love and were married at St. Hugh of Cluny Parish in the Fairhill section of Philadelphia. They started their lives together at 2nd and Tioga in an apartment, moved to Purdy Street and spent 30-plus years in Christ the King Parish in Philadelphia. He was a longtime employee of Sears.

Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Monday, December 30, 2019 from 9:00 A.M. and Funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. at Maternity B. V. M. Church, 9220 Old Bustleton Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19115. His graveside service followed at Lawnview Cemetery, 500 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Holy Redeemer Hospital Hospice - Holy Redeemer Hospital Hospice Inpatient Unit C/O Office of Philanthropy, 521 Moredon Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006.
