Joseph Edward "Sonny" Connelly of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died Thursday, July 22, 2021 at his home. He was 80 years old. Sonny was born April 24, 1941 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late Francis Joseph Connelly and the late Cecilia Connelly (nee - Noone). He is the beloved husband of the late Marie Elaine Connelly; father of Francis Joseph Connelly and his wife the late Lisa (née Smith), and Deborah A. Connelly Sheppard; grandfather of Danny Karp, Joseph Edward Connelly and his wife Katie (née Dolan), Nicholas Sheppard, Aaron Sheppard, Kim Sheppard Marshall and her husband Jimmy, Great Grandfather of Anthony Karp, Logen Marshall, Caleb Marshall; Brother of the late Frances Wilson (née Connelly) and her husband the late George, the late Mary (June) Johnson (née Connelly) and her husband the late Robert, and the late Patricia McGarry (née Connelly) and her husband the Late Joseph. Brother in law of Patricia Woodhead (née Harris) and her husband William, the Late William Harris and his wife the late Ann, the Late Judith Yottey (née Harris), and the late Kenneth Harris Sr. and his wife Nancy He is also survived by his many Cousins, Nieces (née Frank) and Nephews.

Joseph was a United States Marine and served from April 1961 to April 1967 with 4 years of active duty in a Marine artillery unit spending time in Japan, Cuba just to name a few and ended his Marine career as a Corporal and spent the last 2 years in the USMC Reserves out of Philadelphia. It was during his time in the Marines were he met his loving wife and they corresponded by US mail daily. They were married in Bucks County and lived in Philadelphia.

Joe as he was known as at his place of employment which was the Tasty Baking Company AKA TastyKake, as a 37 year machine operator. He was worked on the lines where the Kakes were wrapped in that special wax paper. His main two kakes were the Krimpet and Kandy Kakes. He had several other jobs during his life time and as with everything he did in life he excelled in them and loved the hard work he provided to those companies.

Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Monday, August 16, 2021 from 8:30 A.M. and funeral service at 10:30 A.M. at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Mayfair, 3101 Tyson Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19149. His graveside service followed with military honors rendered by the United States Marine Corps. at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, PA 18940.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Toys for Tots of Philadelphia, 2501 Ford Road, Bristol, PA 19007 or Feast Of Justice, 3101 Tyson Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19149.
