The following obituary was composed by Jane’s family:

Jane Sadler Jones, 101, passed away April 11th at Abington Hospital after a brief illness and was laid to rest at Lawnview Cemetery in Rockledge, PA. She had been a resident of Southampton Estates retirement community in Southampton, PA.

Jane Jones was born and raised on Rising Sun Avenue in Philadelphia. She graduated from Olney High School, Temple University as an English and French major in education and Drexel University with a masters equivalent in library science. At Temple she was a member of the ‘X Group’ of advanced students in education and received a gold medal for French fluency upon graduation.

After her first job at the Free Library of Philadelphia and the early death of her mother, Jane became a librarian for the Philadelphia School District, first at Bartlett Jr. High School and then at Fels Jr. High School where she helped build the library collections from the ground up. Later educational opportunities took her to the Sorbonne in Paris for additional French classes.

She traveled extensively throughout her life beginning with summer sabbaticals to Peru, Chile, Ecuador, Mexico, Greece and Turkey. She loved traveling among the locals and developed a lifelong love of South America, learning Spanish along the way. When not traveling Jane had an unquenchable desire to learn, particularly in the sciences, paleontology and evolution. As an educator at heart, Jane delighted in teaching English as a second language to staff at her retirement community. She embraced Tai Chi in her 90’s which she credited for helping her to live a long life.

While encouraging her father to get a HAM radio license Jane found a passion for it, earning an advanced class license and connecting to other HAMs throughout the world. She earned special recognition for reaching Tom Christian, descendant of Fletcher Christian of Mutiny on the Bounty fame, on Pitcairn Island, one of the two most sought after radio contacts in the world at the time.

Jane was preceded in death by her parents Milton Sadler and Kathryn (Bientzle) Sadler, husband Donald Jones, sisters Caroline Cull and Kathryn Frosberg, nephew Michael Cull and companion Michael Chemerys. She is survived by her nephew Greg Frosberg of Anchorage, Alaska.

The family wishes to express our gratitude to the staff and residents of Southampton Estates for the care and friendship they provided Jane throughout the many years she resided at Southampton.

Jane was always financially supportive of veterans and wildlife. Please consider donating to those causes or to one of your own choosing in Jane’s memory.
