Shirley J. Walker of Abington, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday, July 6, 2021, at her home. She was 91 years old. Born on March 24, 1930, in Philadelphia, she was the daughter of the late Robert James Walker and the late Ellen May Walker (nee Ward).

Shirley was a strong and funny woman with a love of words and travel. She was athletic—she enjoyed softball, basketball, swimming, bowling, and watching the Phillies. After graduating from Temple University in 1951, she even had a short stint as a high school gym teacher. But Shirley worked the bulk of her career as a proofreader at GlaxoSmithKline (then Smith, Kline and French). It was there that she met her best friend and travel buddy, the late Alice Lineman. Together they traveled to far-off locations, such as Afghanistan and Russia. But they especially loved New England and the Jersey Shore, often stopping for dinner at Busch’s Seafood Restaurant in Sea Isle City, NJ.

Shirley was full of life and had many interests and hobbies. She loved lighthouses, birds, gardening, scrabble (in person and online), and eating out. She wrote the most amazing handwritten letters.

Shirley was a loving companion to her mother, Ellen, until her passing in 1985.

She’s survived by nephew Robert Walker and his partner Janet Evans, niece Cheryl Walker Marino, nephew Scott Walker and his wife Jennifer Halloran, 6 great-nieces and nephews, 9 great-great nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends were invited to her visitation on Friday, July 16, 2021 from 10:00 A.M. and funeral service at 11:00 A.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 419 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046.

Religious services were conducted by Rev. Owen Griffiths.

If you’d like to donate in her honor please consider the Special Olympics Pennsylvania, 2570 Boulevard of the Generals, Suite 124, Norristown, PA 19403.
