The following obituary was composed by Helga’s family:
Helga M. Jurczenko died Friday, August 2021 at her daughter’s home in Forest, VA where, during the last year of her life, fought a declining battle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) - she was 82 years old.
Born in Weinheim Landkreis Mannheim (Germany) in 1938, she was the daughter of Christian Friedrich Staier and Martha Margareta Staier. Her father died in combat and her mother married Zivan Marinkovic, adoptive father to Helga. All three received their citizenship to USA in 1950. Her William Penn Senior High School’s class of 1957 yearbook states, ‘pretty Helga has a smile for everyone… dancing and reading are favorite pasttimes … plans to enter Temple for medical secretary training…’.
What brought most joy to Helga was her family in addition to her passion for the arts (and crafts); knitting, crocheting, ceramics and cooking – she loved collecting cookbooks from all over the world.
She was married 24 years to Victor Jurczenko and had 4 daughters – Natalie Reynolds, Forest, VA; Lisa Hughey, Sharon, PA; Dina Chirinos, Douglassville, PA and Kristina Camacho, Willow Grove, PA.
Surviving in addition, are Helga’s grandchildren, Chase and Alexandra Hughey, Pittsburgh, PA., Ryan, Madison, Abby and Ian Chirinos, Douglassville, PA., Spencer and Sophia Camacho, Willow Grove, PA., and great-grandson, Kobe Hughey, Pittsburgh, PA. Preceded in death is Helga’s biological father, her toddler brother, Fritzel and step sister, Milena Marinkovic.
A public graveside service was held at 1:30 PM on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 at Hillside Cemetery at 2556 Susquehanna Road, Abington, PA 19001. Please gather at the cemetery office parking lot when arriving.
Those who wish to remember Helga in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the ALS Association DC/MD/VA Chapter, 30 West Gude Drive, Suite 150, Rockville, MD 20850.
