Hedwig A. Schaffert, (nee Rebmann) of Elkins Park, Pennsylvania died Thursday, October 28, 2021. She was 88 years old. Hedy, as she was known to all, was the beloved wife of William Schaffert who died in 2011.

She was mother of Lilly Warenits and her husband Joseph, Christine Del Peschio and her husband Daniel, William Schaffert and his wife Susan and Robert Schaffert and his wife Lori. Hedy was grandmother to Philip and Timothy Warenits, Dean Del Peschio, Jacqueline (Schaffert) Hencsie, Will and Jason Schaffert, and Amanda and Matthew Smith. Great grandchildren include Malcolm and Felix Hencsie, Luna Schaffert and Alexander Warenits.

Hedy was born, raised, and educated in Weinheim, Germany. She and her parents, Adele and Ernst Rebmann left Germany and emigrated to Canada by boat landing in Quebec City on October 31, 1951. Her parents later sponsored her future husband William Schaffert and he arrived in Canada in 1952. They were married in 1953 and moved to the United States in 1955, settling into their home in Elkins Park in 1957.

Hedy’s life was devoted to being a wife, mother, and homemaker and lived at her same Elkins Park home for almost 64 years. Her passion was her plants and flowers, both indoors and out! Her green thumb was well-known in the neighborhood and she could nurse almost any plant back to health. Hedy and her husband also enjoyed traveling extensively together after his retirement. Throughout their whole lives together, they regularly returned to Germany and Austria to visit family and friends. Hedy was able to celebrate her 88th birthday last August with her children and their families including most grandchildren and great grandchildren together for the day.

Relatives and friends were invited to her visitation on Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 9.30 A.M. and to a celebration of Hedy’s Life at 11:00 A.M. at the Elkins Park Presbyterian Church, 234 Cedar Road, Elkins Park, PA, 19027.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made in her memory to:  America's VetDogs, 371 East Jericho Turnpike, Smithtown, NY 11787-2906 or Save our Monarchs Foundation for the Monarch butterflies, P.O. Box 390135, Minneapolis, MN 55439.
