The following story was composed by Pat’s family:

Patricia Holmes of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania died on Friday, March 18th at her home the day after her 91st birthday. Patricia was born March 17th, 1931 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to James and Agnes McCullough (nee McNamee).

Patricia is the beloved wife of Thomas Holmes; mother of Thomas Holmes (Carol), Mary Elaine Holmes-Bricker (late Mark), Patricia Mathers (William), and Jennifer Granese (Vincent); grandmother to Brian and Peter Holmes and Laura Sanford (nee Holmes), Matthew, Moriah, Marina and Michael Bricker, Sarah Woods (nee Mathers), the late Shannon Mathers, Johnathan and Jessica Granese; great grandmother to Rui and Beatrix Holmes, Jacob Bricker, Reagan Woods and Henry Granese; dear sister of the late Claire Hamill (nee McCullough} and the late James McCullough.

Pat was born and raised in Philadelphia where she graduated from Little Flower High School. After high school she accepted a secretarial position at UNIVAC and worked her way up to a programmer position working under Grace Hopper, a pioneer in computer programming.

Pat married Tom in 1959 and they raised their family in the East Oak Lane area of the city where they were members of the Saint Joseph’s Catholic Church in Cheltenham. When her children were grown, she received an Associate Degree in Accounting from Community College of Philadelphia. Pat opened her own business as a Tax Consultant preparing tax returns in people’s homes. In addition to owning and operating her own business, she obtained a full-time position as a Tax Account Specialist at Stradley, Ronon, Stevens and Young LLP in center city. As her client list and tax business grew, Pat opened a store front office on Oxford Avenue where her husband Tom joined her in providing tax and accounting services year-round for the next twelve years. Pat was an Enrolled Agent for the IRS. She provided tax services to customers and family members well into her eighties.

When Pat was in her seventies, she began taking courses at Penn State University Abington Campus. In 2009, she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree with Distinction in English at the age of 78. Her husband Tom was again at her side auditing the classes with her. Two of her grandchildren, Johnathan and Sarah, were attending Penn State University at the same time.

Pat and Tom spent many years square dancing at various community spots in the Delaware Valley. Pat loved to travel with Tom visiting Yellowstone National Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, the Grand Canyon, Mackinac Island, the Vatican, the hills of Ireland and Scotland, and the Tower of London, to name a few. Pat’s favorite destination though by far was Ocean City, NJ where she spent time with her children and grandchildren relaxing on the beach until sunset, bike riding, walking the boards and playing shuffleboard on 6th Street.

Pat and Tom were members of St. Cecilia’s Church.  She served for a long time as a communion minister.  Her faith was extremely important to her throughout her whole life.

Relatives and friends were invited to her viewing on Friday, March 25, 2022 from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 419 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046. Relatives and friends were also invited to her Funeral Mass on Saturday, March 26, 2022 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Cecilia Church, 535 Rhawn Street, Philadelphia, PA 19111. Her graveside service followed at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, 3301 West Cheltenham Avenue, Cheltenham, PA 19038.

Religious services were conducted by Fr. Charles E. Bonner, pastor of St. Cecilia Church, 535 Rhawn Street, Philadelphia, PA 19111.

Donations may be made in her memory to St. Joseph Villa, 110 West Wissahickon Avenue, Flourtown, PA 19031.
