Julio Padin, from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on February 7th, 2022, just shy of his 101st birthday.  Julio was born on February 20, 1921 in Havana, Cuba.  Raised on a tobacco farm, he was a skilled jack-of-all-trades and occasional singer in a band, and completing the Cuban stereotype, was a huge baseball fan.  It was at a baseball game, in fact, that he would meet Estela Hernandez, the woman that would go on to be his wife for 72 years.

Like many other Cubans, he and his wife fled Cuba when Fidel Castro took power.  They, along with their 9 year old daughter, left behind a comfortable life and all their worldly possessions and came to the United States.  They didn't speak English, and the first few years saw difficult times. But Julio was a hard worker who was willing to take whatever work he could to support his family and give them a better life.  He put his daughter through Catholic school and then college and eventually law school.  He would become a proud U.S. citizen, and could often be seen tending his tidy N.E. Philly home.  He would help raise his grandson, and would be there to help care and comfort his daughter Mercedes when cancer took her life seventeen years ago.  He would then go on to help raise his great-grandsons Padin, Adler, and Gavin into their teenage years, and was even able to keep up with them physically right up until his mid-nineties.

He is survived by his wife, Estela, daughter Magaly Padin-Bachelier, granddaughter Alexandra Bachelier, grandsons Nathaniel Bachelier and Joshua Stein, as well as a number of great-grandchildren.

Relatives and friends were invited to his visitation on Friday, May 20, 2022 from 10:00 A.M. and funeral service at 10:30 A.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 419 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046.

Religious services were conducted by Rev. Augusto Concha from St. William Church, 6200 Rising Sun Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19111.
