Mary Gene McDermott of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania, died Tuesday, August 9, 2022, at her home. She was 76 years old. Mary Gene was born July 6, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the oldest of 13 children, daughter of the late Joseph Hannigan and the late Mary Hannigan (née Connors).

Mary Gene is the beloved wife of Ralph V. McDermott; mother of Megan Wagaman (husband Michael) and Ryan McDermott (wife Maureen O’Brien); grandmother of Connor Wagaman, Justine Wagaman, and Murphy McDermott.

Mary Gene was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia. She worked for many years as a studio director for Recording for the Blind and Dyslexic, recruiting, training, and overseeing more than 200 volunteers to make audio recordings of textbooks.

Mary Gene and Ralph were high school sweethearts, who met at an Our Lady of Ransom school dance. They had nearly 54 years of married happiness, living in several states. Their two children were born in Nashville, Tennessee. Ralph and Mary Gene returned to their beloved Philadelphia in 1979 and continued raising their children there.

Mary Gene enjoyed spinning, weaving, quilting, and other fiber arts, making many beautiful items for many people. She was a longtime member of the Philadelphia Guild of Handweavers.

Relatives and friends were invited to Mary Gene’s viewing on Saturday, August 13, 2022, from 2:00-4:00 PM at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 419 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046.

Mary Gene’s request is that you dress in summer casual and follow COVID-19 protocols regarding social distancing and mask wearing.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mary Gene’s memory to Jenkintown Food Cupboard, 328 Summit Avenue, Jenkintown, PA 19046
