Penelope Jane (Rose) Holmes was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on March 10, 1947. Penny was a devoted daughter to George and Margaret (Gliddon) Rose. Born and raised in the Burholme neighborhood of Philadelphia, Penny was a lifelong fan of the Phillies and Eagles. These teams brought her so much joy right until the end of her life. Penny died on November 11, 2022, after a yearlong struggle with Alzheimer’s disease.

A 1965 graduate of Northeast High School, Penny went on to complete a Medical Technician program. Penny worked for several years in both medical testing and industrial research. The great pride of Penny’s life was not her work but her commitment to her community. In 1979, Penny and her husband Thom moved to Upper Dublin Township where they would raise their two daughters, Amy and Lori. Penny spent countless hours volunteering for all things related to her daughters’ schooling and activities. Penny was a PTA president, Girl Scout leader, after school class coordinator and so much else. Even after her girls finished in school, Penny remained a member of the Educational Advisory Committee.

Penny found great joy in her neighborhood. She loved living on the Vance Drive cul-de-sac. Neighborhood kids trooped through her home playing dress-up, doing crafts, and making a mess. The commotion and mess never bothered Penny; it made her so happy that everyone felt comfortable in her home. Penny worked with the neighbors to plan a 4th of July block party for many years and hosted Christmas brunches that served as reunions as the kids all grew up and had kids of their own. Penny loved being a good friend. Each year she celebrated birthdays with friends making sure each birthday was special. She loved to travel with friends and family. Cherishing many trips with her close friend Floss, the two cruised in Hawaii, rode dog sleds in Alaska, and took a white-water rafting trip. Penny and Thom spent many happy hours on the beaches of Wildwood, NJ, Bonita Springs, FL, and Hawaii. Penny loved to ride the lazy river with her grandkids and could be persuaded to ride the waterslides. Penny loved to go to new and familiar places and found joy in the adventure.

Penny greatly loved her family. She and Thomas John Holmes were married on October 19, 1968, recently celebrating their 54th anniversary. Thom and Penny raised their girls together with fierce love, pride, and true care. Penny loved to root for the T-ball and soccer teams Thom coached. She organized the swim parties while Thom was the announcer for the meets. It was vitally important to Penny that her girls had both strong roots and strong wings. Penny’s love for all things crafty and kid related extended into her years as a grandmother. Penny loved her three grandchildren immensely and spent many hours making scrapbooks documenting their lives. Penny would make the absolute best Halloween costumes for her grandkids. Adding a third grandchild just two years ago added immeasurable joy to Penny’s life.

Penny is survived by her devoted husband Thomas Holmes, her daughters, and their spouses: Amy and Bob Foulkes and Lori and Phil Riley and her grandchildren Margaret and Thomas Foulkes and George Riley and her three nieces. Penny was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Barbara (Rose) Patterson.

Penny loved the Christmas holiday and loved nothing more than spreading holiday cheer to everyone. We ask that in lieu of flowers that everyone takes an extra ornament from a local giving tree to spread Christmas cheer in your community.

Relatives and friends were invited to her visitation on Sunday, November 20, 2022 from 10:00 A.M. and celebration of life service at 11:00 A.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 501 Easton Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090. After the services at the funeral home please join the family at Penny’s and Thom’s home for refreshments and the Eagles’ game.
