Valerie P. Hughes of Quakertown, Pennsylvania passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023 at St. Luke’s Hospital Bethlehem. She was 63 years old. Valerie was born February 14, 1959 in Somers Point, New Jersey, daughter of the late Francis James Abel and the late Barbara J. Abel (nee - Stevenson). She is the beloved mother of Shanen Hughes, Conan Hughes, and Dylan Hughes; devoted grandmother of Alyssa, Alexis, Tyler, Kyera, Cadin, Kyler, Rowyn, and Mikail; great grandmother of Caleb; sister of Francis W. Abel and his wife Cynthia, Robert T. Abel and his wife Vicki, and Veronica S. Abel.
Valerie was raised and educated in Willow Grove, PA. She was a 1977 graduate of Upper Moreland High School. Valerie worked as a lead editor for years at the US Patent Office. During her tenure there, she simplified a multi page process for submission of patents saving time and money for years to come. Her greatest joy was raising children, both her own and that of many families. She owned and operated a daycare and was instrumental in the growth and care of her grandchildren. She cared deeply for family connection and always looked forward to family reunions and meetings of the Van Kouwenhoven - Conover Family Association settlers of Atlantic City and New Amsterdam (New York City).
Relatives and friends were invited to her visitation on Friday, February 3, 2023 from 12:00 P.M. and a family lead time for sharing at 12:30 P.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 501 Easton Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090. Her graveside service followed at Hillside Cemetery, 2556 Susquehanna Road, Roslyn, PA 19001.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to her children to help cover Valerie’s expenses.
