Josef Wesztergom of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania passed away Thursday, April 27, 2023 at his home. He was 91 years old. Josef was born May 11, 1931 in Magyarpolany, Hungary, son of the late Josef Wesztergom and the late Elisabeth Wesztergom (nee - Leskovics). He is the beloved husband of 46 years to the late Maria M. Wesztergom; father of Joseph Wesztergom and his wife Dorothy, Annamarie Wesztergom, and Anton Wesztergom and his wife Kathleen; grandfather of Alisa, Jeffrey and his wife Carly, Joseph and his wife Carly, Jamie and her husband Jon, Adam, and Daniel; great grandfather of Alexander, Colton, Elijah, Cooper, Haley, and Lucas. Also survived by his grand-dogs Scarlett, Ringo, Odin, Brooklyn, and Brody; and his grand-cat, Chrome.

Josef was born and raised in the village of Magyarpolany, Hungary. After WWII the family was forcibly removed from their home, and deported to East Germany. While living in East Germany he helped to rebuild war-damaged highways.

The family escaped East Germany in the middle of the night to get to West Germany and, ultimately, the United States in 1952.

Josef met his wife Maria at the local German clubs after relocating to Philadelphia and were married in 1956.

In Philadelphia, he worked in the brewing department of Schmidt’s for 32 years and retired after working for several years in the Athletic Department at the University of Pennsylvania.

Josef and Maria loved to travel and visited their favorite location, Las Vegas and the natural areas around it, on several occasions.

Anyone who knew Josef quickly realized what a loving and caring person he was, and despite the trials experienced in his war-torn youth, always had a smile on his face and was happy see his friends and family.

Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Thursday, May 4, 2023 from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. and Funeral Mass at 10:00 A.M. at Presentation B. V. M.
