Alan K. Smith Jr. of Hatboro, Pennsylvania passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, July 24, 2023. He was 87 years old. Alan was born August 1, 1935, son of the late Alan K. Smith Sr. and the late Margaret Gaw Smith. He was born and raised in Philadelphia, and has been a resident of Upper Moreland Township for over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marion Brodie Smith. He leaves behind three children, Carolyn Santillan and her husband Rafe of Gainesville, TX, Linda Carle and her husband Jerry of Quakertown, and Alan K. Smith III of Hatboro. He is also survived by five grandchildren, and nine great grandchildren. Alan is also survived by a sister, Margaret Elizabeth “Bettie” Wilson and her husband Rob of New Bern, NC.

He graduated from Northeast High School (’53) and was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the United States Navy aboard the USS Lexington, CVA 16, and the USS Midway, CVA 41. He is Past Commander, Adjutant, Historian, Webmaster, and member of the American Legion, Liberty Post 308, Willow Grove, PA, and Passe Chef-de-Gare and Webmaster of Voiture 927, 40 and 8, Montgomery County. Alan was also a member of the National Rifle Association.

Alan, having worked in marketing, installation, repair, and construction, retired from Verizon (Bell Atlantic) as a Management Safety Specialist after 38 years of service. He was a member and past President of the Philadelphia Chapter of the American Society of Safety Engineers. He also worked as Corporate Safety Director for Danella Companies in Plymouth Meeting for five years. Alan was Secretary and Webmaster for the Fraternity of Retired Telephone Workers of Philadelphia.

He enjoyed working with the computer documenting family history and pictures, 45’s and LP’s, and was an avid enthusiast of locomotives and model railroading.

Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Monday, July 31, 2023 from 11:00 A.M. to 12:00 P.M. and funeral service at 12:00 P.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 501 Easton Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090. His graveside service followed at Whitemarsh Memorial Park, 1169 Limekiln Pike, Ambler, PA 19002.
