Irmgard Martino, nee Distler, 97, passed away peacefully early morning 8/21/2023 in Whitemarsh, Pennsylvania.  Irmgard, born April 8, 1926 in Nuremberg, Germany, daughter of the late Jakob and the late Marie Christiane (nee Buheitel) Distler. Irmgard resided in Bremen and Nuremberg. She lived a life filled with loving friends & family. Irmgard was Predeceased by her parents and her husband, Joseph L Martino, who she met and married while he was a member of the US Army stationed in Germany during and after World War II. As the story goes, Joseph re-enlisted post war to ensure the marriage would occur and he and Irmgard wed.

Shortly after the war in 1946, they moved to Philadelphia and resided in Port Richmond. Later they moved to the Rhawnhurst neighborhood in Philadelphia.  Over the years, Irmgard was employed by Girard Bank, the Social Security Administration and Siemens. After her retirement, she reentered the workforce and was a valuable employee of the Internal Revenue Service.  

Irmgard was involved in many organizations. As a strong supporter of German heritage, Irmgard and Joe enjoyed many years of German festivities at various German clubs. Irmgard was on the Board of Directors of Vereinigung Erzgebirge in Warminster, as well as a member of the German Society of Pennsylvania and the Cannstatters Volkfest Verein. Supporting German heritage and the study of the German language was dear to her heart, as well as her commitment to supporting animal welfare organizations. She was a generous contributor to many associations.

Irmgard is survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families, and by many dear friends.

Relatives and friends were invited to her visitation on Thursday, August 31, 2023 from 10:00 to 10:50 A.M. and Funeral Mass at 11:00 A.M. at Resurrection of Our Lord Church, 2000 Shelmire Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19152. Her entombment followed at Sunset Memorial Park, 333 West County Line Road, Feasterville, PA 19053.

Religious services were conducted by Rev. Joseph E. Howarth.
