Katherine Eileen Schaefer (née Tobin) of Abington, Pennsylvania died on 2nd September 2023 at the Philadelphia Protestant Home.  She was 79 years old. She was born to Anna (née Turner) and Robert Tobin, Sr on 18 May 1944. She was the beloved wife of Paul H. Schaefer (deceased); mother of Sheila Schaefer of Melbourne, Australia and John Schaefer and his wife Lily of New York; devoted grandmother of Samuel and Zoey Schaefer; sister of Robert (deceased) and James Tobin (wife Carole Ozanian) of Los Angeles, CA.  She is also survived by her many nieces, nephews, and their families.

She graduated from Kensington High School in 1961 and from Episcopal Hospital School of Nursing in 1964 as a Registered Nurse.  She furthered her education by receiving a bachelor’s degree from St. Joseph’s University and a master’s degree from Eastern College.

Eileen was the Head Nurse of Labor and Delivery at Jeanes Hospital for many years and then worked at the Philadelphia School District as a school nurse at Frankford High School until her retirement.

Eileen was an active volunteer in her community through the years.  She led a Girl Scout Troop, volunteered at McKinley Elementary School, Planned Parenthood, Ryerss Museum and Library.  She was active in her Lutheran faith, and undertook many volunteer roles at Immanuel Lutheran Church, most notably as treasurer, and was an active member of St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Glenside.

Eileen was known for her compassion, kindness and strength of character.  Her chosen quote in her nursing yearbook illustrated these qualities “Hearts that feel and eyes that smile are the dearest gifts heaven supplies.” (Thomas Moore, poet, d 1852)

She will be greatly missed as a mother, friend, and colleague.

Relatives and friends were invited to her visitation on Thursday, September 14, 2023 at 10:00 A.M. followed by a memorial service at 11:00 A.M. at the St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 North Easton Road, Glenside, PA 19038.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to St Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 120 North Easton Road, Glenside, PA 19038. Donations can be made electronically visiting stpaulsglenside.org and clicking on the “Donate” button at the top of the page.
