Manfred Wilhelm Bast of Jenkintown, Pennsylvania died Saturday, November 4, 2023 at his home. He was 85 years old. Manfred was born November 29, 1937 in Rheydt, Germany, son of the late Wilhelm Bast and the late Josefine Bast (nee - Rötten). He is the beloved husband of Helga Bast; father of Brigitte DeChiaro and her husband Al and the late Michael Wilhelm Bast; grandfather of Anderson and Alexander DeChiaro.

Manfred was born, raised, and educated in Rheydt, a borough of the German city Mönchengladbach, located in the west of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany. He emigrated to the United States in 1965 and went to work in the kitchen at Manufacturer’s Country Club in Dresher, PA. He worked for many years as an Executive Chef and an ACF Certified Master Pastry Chef. Manfred met his future wife when he brought his car to Leo’s Garage, after an accident, and was given the phone number of Helga by the mechanic. The two fell in love and were married in 1969 at St. Henry’s Parish in Philadelphia. Manfred enjoyed volunteering his talents to help raise money at events such as the Octoberfest at the Vereinigung Erzgebirge, where he was a longtime member. He donated several cookbooks to the ACF to help young chefs. He was also a proud member of The Honorable Order of the Golden Toque. Manfred was a chef for Fidelity bank and ARA (now Aramark), as well as a professor at the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College during his working career. He was always there to help out where he could, assisting at many events over the years.

Relatives and friends were invited to his memorial gathering on Saturday, November 18, 2023 at 12:00 P.M. at Austrian Village, 321 Huntingdon Pike, Rockledge, PA 19046.
