Richard Shacklady of Glenside, Pennsylvania heard the angels calling on Saturday, February 10, 2024 at Jefferson Abington Hospital. He was 96 years old. Despite his declining health the last few months, he continued to have a firm right hand grip, sharp mind and strong sense of compassion towards everyone he met.  He always asked how a person was doing and he always expressed his appreciation for those who helped him, no matter how big or small their gesture.  He loved his wife and five children greatly.  Richard was born August 9, 1927 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, son of the late George Albert Shacklady and the late Margaret Shacklady (nee - Domville). He is the beloved husband of the late Edith F. Shacklady; father of Garry Shacklady and his wife Mary; Lynn Shacklady-Black and her husband, the late Nelson Black; Bryan Shacklady;  Sandy Shacklady-White and her husband,Tom White; and Keith Shacklady and his wife Andrea; grandfather of Mandee Shacklady, Wrenn Shacklady, and Grace Shacklady; brother of Margaret “Peggy” M. Miller, the late Doris E. Simpson, the late George A. Shacklady Jr. and the late Ruth Shacklady. He is also survived by a loving extended family.

Richard was born, raised, and educated in Philadelphia. He was the first of his siblings to be born in the United States.  His parents, his two older sisters and older brother were born in England. He graduated from Germantown High School and continued his education at LaSalle College. He married Edith Brearey at the St. Thomas Church of Whitemarsh in Flourtown, Pennsylvania in 1950. He was an insurance account executive for Booth, Potter, & Seal in Philadelphia and later Clair O'Dell where he managed accounts with many corporations. Richard enjoyed bowling, watching sports: the Phillies, Eagles and European soccer, playing baseball on his company team, traveling with his wife with Disney being a favorite place to visit once his children were grown up so he and Edith could enjoy it on their own, hunting or maybe more liking the beauty and quietness of the woods, taking his constitutional walks on Wildwood beaches on family summer vacations, and watching TV shows such The Price is Right, Wonder Woman, Walker Texas Ranger and MacGuyver. He truly loved nature and being outdoors. He was a loyal American, who loved his country deeply.  He will be missed greatly by everyone who was blessed to know him.

Relatives and friends were invited to his viewing on Friday, February 16, 2024 from 9:00 to 10:00 A.M. and funeral service at 10:00 A.M. at Wetzel and Son Funeral Home, 501 Easton Road, Willow Grove, PA 19090.  His graveside service followed at Forest Hills Cemetery, 101 Byberry Road, Huntingdon Valley, PA 19006.

Religious services were conducted by Rev. Owen Griffiths.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Best Friends Animal Society, 5001 Angel Canyon Road, Kanab, UT 84741-5000 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
